Problem Statement

Low self-worth is common among young women, & they tend to lose their self-esteem when transitioning to an adolescent.

Problem Research

  • Low self-esteem can be caused by negative and destructive thoughts that girls have toward themselves.

  • The percentage of girls with a healthy level of self-esteem decreases dramatically when transitioning from elementary school to high school.

  • Teenage girls tend to have much lower self-esteem than any other age group.

Relevance of the problem

Low self-esteem can cause many negative impacts on well-being such as, lack of motivation, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety disorders, and mental health issues, and can negatively influence well-being and quality of life. And those who have low self-esteem in early adolescence are more likely to develop anxiety and depression later in life.

Thesis Statement

By examining the topic of low self-esteem, negative self-thoughts and comparison in women; neuroplasticity and positive self-talk; as well as self-compassion and gratitude, an effective solution to combating low self-esteem and low self-worth in young women will be identified.

Neuroplasticity

  • The brain can change and be rewired as habits change over time.

  • You can change the makeup and physical structure of your brain by thinking about yourself in a positive light. By making this a habit, a positive subconscious mindset will likely develop.

  • When positive self-talk becomes a habit, it overcomes the automatic negativity and can help positively change one’s attitude toward themselves, which can help increase self-esteem.

Research Breakdown

Words have power and people are defined by their thoughts. What girls think about is what they are likely to become, and if they make a habit of combating negativity towards themselves with encouragement, this can result in a more positive and confident person by changing the makeup of their brain and shifting their mindset.

Solution

The solution that I created is a positive encouragement subscription box brand called “Shine to inspire,” which aims to combat the low self-esteem women feel by developing a habit of positive self-thoughts through neuroplasticity, positive self-talk, gratitude, and self-compassion.

Target Audience

The target audience includes adolescent females aged about 12-18 who are experiencing low self-esteem. It also includes young women who are transitioning from elementary to high school.

Solution

The brand helps girls foster self-compassion and kindness toward themselves with positive affirmations, gratitude activities, and constant uplifting reminders. And it encourages women to see themselves in a positive and encouraging light.

Brand Goals

  • Encourage girls to practice self-compassion, gratitude and positivity.

  • Combat the lies and criticism they have toward themselves by finding value in themselves through positivity.

  • Remind women of their worth and use neuroplasticity to strengthen a positive automatic mindset.

Design Deliverables

The brand can be described as aesthetic, calm, cheerful, feminine, cute, comforting, welcoming, soft, uplifting, happy, peaceful, and warm. Pink, yellow, green, and ivory are the brand colours because they are cheery, cozy, friendly, warm colours and are known to evoke uplifting emotions.

Subscription Box

  • Each new box has a different theme (builds excitement & anticipation).

  • Make girls feel warm, happy, and encouraged.

  • Makes people smile and brightens their mood.

  • Invited in and greeted with a friendly, uplifting saying.

  • Increase habit of positivity, and increase self-esteem.

Strategy

  • The strategy is to have an item that girls take around with them all the time to develop neuroplasticity and whenever they look at it, they are reminded of the truth.

  • When they look at the affirmation or the encouraging words on the items, girls would be able to combat the lies and negative thoughts with positivity.

  • The more girls do this, and make this a habit, the more their brain will produce strong neuropathways that will overcome the negativity and produce a positive subconscious mindset.

A positive quote is on the sleeves to help with neuroplasticity so that every time girls feel a negative thought about themselves, they can look down at their sleeve to be reminded of the truth with positivity. This would help build a habit of positive thoughts.
